Business Licensing
On November 26, 2002,
the Council adopted new business license regulations, replacing the
Pierce County regulations that had been adopted by reference. The new
Chapter 5.05 of the Edgewood Municipal Code (EMC)
establishes regulations and fees more suited to Edgewood. The fee for a
City business license is $35. This fee is not intended to be revenue
generating but simply covers the costs of administering the licensing
process.
If you need to renew
your current Edgewood business license, please submit the
renewal application form,
along with the $35 annual fee.
The new EMC Title 5
requires all businesses operating within the City limits
to obtain a business license, including home businesses and businesses
that reside outside the City limits but are conducting business in the
City of Edgewood. Home businesses must also comply with the
City’s Development Regulations and
undergo a review (additional fees may apply) by the Planning
Department. This review is the method for determining the impacts of a
particular business on the neighboring residents. Some of those impacts
include traffic, noise, use and storage of hazardous materials, use of
heavy equipment and power tools, or other impacts that could create a
disturbing or objectionable condition in the neighborhood. Our goal is
to encourage our home business operations to thrive and, at the same
time, ensure the safety and peaceful enjoyment of our residential
community.
If you are operating
a business out of your home or in a residential area and have not yet
undergone a Planning Department review (fees may apply), you must submit
a Home Business Permit Application and $35
license fee and receive the appropriate approvals prior to being issued
your business license. If
you're not operating your business in a residential area, the
Business License Application and
$35 fee should be submitted to the Finance Department for processing prior to
the start of business at any location within the City. Most all
businesses are subject to the $35 fee, unless exemptions apply such as
those afforded to honorably discharged veterans, etc. Please see the
Home Business Application & Info Sheet
for quick answers to many questions regarding your home business license
permit.
