A Word from the Chief

It is important that the citizens of Edgewood are informed about the crime in their neighborhoods as well as the state of their Police Department.  With the budget cuts of the prior years, the Police Department’s staffing was cut by 45% in 2009 and 2010.  The Department no longer has a detective assigned to investigate property crimes.  The City does have a contract with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department for investigative services for major crimes.  In addition to the loss of the detective, the Department lost three patrol officers as well as the office assistant.  Our current staffing is one chief and five patrol officers.  This is the same staffing the City had when we became a City in 1996.  The Department also has six wonderful part-time volunteers.  Four of the volunteers try to cover some of the hours in the office, one works as a reserve patrol officer and the other manages the radar trailers.

Due to our current staffing we are finding ourselves having to prioritize what we do.  With the increase in property crimes, more of our efforts are given to solving these crimes.  It has been amazing to see the results that the five officers in Edgewood have been able to achieve.  That being said, there has been a price to pay; when an officer is investigating a prior crime, he is not driving the City’s streets preventing crime or slowing down speeders.

With our staffing level it is even more important that we are united with the citizens to solve and prevent crime.  Protecting your property, watching over your neighbor’s property and calling when you see something suspicious all can help.  If you see a crime in progress, please call 911.

Radar Trailer on the Road
Police volunteer Richard Morrison places Edgewood’s radar trailer in various locations throughout the City.  This device, purchased through grant funding, not only shows the current speed, but also flashes a reminder to “slow down” if the posted speed limit has been exceeded.  Additionally, this radar trailer has the capability to collect data and provide information about the habits and behaviors motorists display in various locations in the City.  Thank you Richard for your public safety volunteer efforts.

Ask the Chief

I've added links below to share answers to some common questions that citizens have asked me. If you have a question that you would like answered, feel free to send me an email. You may see your question posted!

Need a Copy of a
Police Report?

The City of Edgewood contracts police services through Pierce County Sheriff.  As a part of that contract, all police records are handled and maintained by the County.  To request a copy of a police report or other police record, contact the Pierce County South Sound 911 (formerly L.E.S.A.) by calling 253.798.7441 or at 945 Tacoma Avenue South, Tacoma, WA 98402.

We recognize that not all of our citizens have access to the web. However, those who are connected can help share the spread the word by talking with their neighbors about the information found on the City website.

Thanks for visiting!
