Building a Climate-Resilient Edgewood

Edgewood is taking an important first step toward a more climate-resilient future. In response to Washington State House Bill 1181, passed in May 2023, the City has launched a climate planning process to develop a Climate Element as part of its 2029 Comprehensive Plan update.

HB 1181 requires cities and counties planning under the Growth Management Act to integrate climate change into long-range planning — both to reduce climate pollution and to better prepare communities for the impacts of a changing climate.

Edgewood_Infographic_1-v2Understanding Edgewood’s Climate Risks

Our Draft Climate Impacts 2029 report lays the foundation for this work. It explores how rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and increasing wildfire risks could affect:

      • Public health
      • Infrastructure
      • Ecosystems
      • Economic prosperity
      • People most at-risk

The report also highlights specific risks in Edgewood, including:

  • Air pollution along major traffic corridors
  • Flood-prone neighborhoods
  • High exposure to wildfire smoke

Climate change is a local issue that impacts the day-to-day challenges Edgewood residents face—from emergency response and infrastructure strain to public health concerns and economic disruptions.

By proactively identifying risks and integrating climate resilience into land use, infrastructure, development, and public health strategies, Edgewood can reduce future harm and support the well-being of all residents.
